Fiskars produces highly durable, Finnish-made scissors and axes, but buyers must navigate a massive catalog of lower-quality, outsourced garden and craft tools that trade on the brand's heritage.

Fiskars is one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the Western world, originally founded as a Finnish ironworks. They are most recognized for introducing the first plastic-handled scissors to the market in 1967, characterized by their trademarked orange color. Today, Fiskars Group is a massive global conglomerate that owns numerous luxury home brands, while the core Fiskars brand produces a wide range of cutting, gardening, and crafting tools.

The Classic orange-handled scissors, Norden axes, and X-Series axes are manufactured at the Billnäs factory in Finland. Premium cookware is made at the Sorsakoski factory in Finland. Hard garden tools (spades, weeders) are produced at their facility in Słupsk, Poland. Standard tier scissors, pruners, and craft tools are outsourced to various facilities, primarily in China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Why They're Listed

Fiskars is listed because their core, domestically produced product lines—specifically the Classic series scissors and premium axes—remain highly functional tools in their respective categories. Their high-end axes utilize proprietary over-molded polymer collars that drastically reduce handle breakage, and their premium scissors are still individually tension-tested in Finland.

Noteworthy Products

Classic No. 8 Scissors (21cm)

Classic No. 8 Scissors (21cm)

The original 1967 design that introduced plastic handles to the market, these remain manufactured and acoustically tested for blade tension in the Billnäs factory in Finland. Authentic Finnish models feature "STAINLESS FINLAND" stamped directly onto the steel blade.

X-Series Splitting Axes

X-Series Splitting Axes

Axes featuring a hollow polymer handle and a coated steel head, engineered to balance swing speed and impact force while drastically reducing handle breakage.

Norden Axes

Norden Axes

A line combining traditional hickory handles with Fiskars' proprietary over-molded FiberComp collar to protect the wood against overstrike damage.

Important Context

The Halo Effect and Outsourcing: Fiskars applies their trademark orange branding to hundreds of budget-tier items. While the Classic scissors and premium axes are made in Finland, and certain hard garden tools are made in Poland, much of the standard garden gear, craft supplies, and lower-tier scissors are mass-produced in Asia. These outsourced lines do not share the historical durability of the flagship Finnish-made products.

Commercial Use Exclusions: The lifetime (US) and 25-year (EU/International) warranties are strictly for consumer use. Using a Fiskars axe, pruner, or tool for commercial, professional, or hire purposes immediately voids the manufacturer's warranty.

Registration Loopholes: In the EU, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, the 25-year warranty on premium axes (X-Series and Norden) and cookware is only valid if the buyer actively registers the product on the Fiskars website within 30 days of purchase. Failure to register defaults the tool to standard regional consumer protection limits.

Wear and Tear Classifications: The warranty covers manufacturing defects, not regular use. Blade dulling, rust from improper storage, chipped paint, and standard handle abrasions are explicitly excluded. Furthermore, buyers are frequently responsible for the shipping costs to send heavy items back to a Fiskars facility for warranty evaluation.

Further Information
Spotting the Finnish Originals: Due to heavy outsourcing of lower-tier products, finding authentic Finnish-made scissors in North American big-box craft stores requires checking the physical item. Authentic models belong to the "Classic" series and will explicitly have "STAINLESS FINLAND" or "MADE IN FINLAND" etched into the metal blade beneath the Fiskars logo. They also feature an adjustable tension screw. Lower-tier outsourced scissors generally only have "Fiskars" stamped on the blade, may use a non-adjustable rivet instead of a screw, and feature a slightly duller plastic handle mold.
Corporate Conglomerate: Fiskars Group operates far beyond the tools that bear its name. The parent company owns and manages a massive portfolio of premium heritage brands, including Gerber Legendary Blades, Georg Jensen, Royal Copenhagen, and Waterford Crystal.
