Astronaut Boot
A 6-eye boot featuring a straight-cut top. It is notable for its more refined silhouette and use of "Lux" leather, which offers a higher shine than the Greasy line but remains more flexible and durable than the Hi-Shine line.
The primary BIFL option for air-cushioned footwear. Unlike competitors who have moved to mass-market construction, Solovair retains a structural shank for arch support and high-grade European leathers, all manufactured in the original Northamptonshire factory.
Solovair is the flagship brand of NPS Shoes Ltd, a co-operative founded in Wollaston, UK. For 35 years, NPS was the primary licensed manufacturer for Dr. Martens. When Dr. Martens relocated production to Asia in 2003, NPS pivoted to the Solovair label (a portmanteau of "Sole-of-Air") using the same original tooling and machinery. They are one of the last remaining large-scale producers of Goodyear Welted air-cushioned boots in England.
Founded as the Northamptonshire Productive Society (NPS).
Began producing the first Dr. Martens boots under license for the UK market.
NPS officially trademarks the Solovair name to sell its own brand.
Dr. Martens moves production to Asia; NPS nearly closes but successfully pivots to Solovair.
Expanded UK factory capacity to meet surging demand for UK-made heritage footwear.
Returns: 30 Days, unworn condition. Logistics: For UK customers, returns are processed via DHL for a flat fee. International customers are responsible for all return shipping costs and original duties.
Solovair is listed for its Structural Longevity and Repairability. Their boots utilize leather uppers with a thickness of 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm, significantly denser than standard fashion boots. Most importantly, Solovair includes a wooden or composite shank inside the sole. This provides critical arch support and prevents the boot from "collapsing" or folding in the middle over time, a common failure point in modern un-shanked boots.

The direct BIFL alternative to the 1460. The "Greasy" leather is a full-grain, oil-tanned hide that is exceptionally resistant to salt and water. It is the most repair-friendly material in their catalog.
The "Hi-Shine" Leather Limitation: Solovair's "Hi-Shine" leather is a corrected-grain leather with a plastic (polyurethane) coating. While it looks iconic, it is prone to permanent cracking at the flex points because it cannot absorb leather conditioner. For BIFL durability, the "Greasy" or "Gaucho" leather lines are recommended, as they are full-grain and can be maintained indefinitely.
Sizing Discrepancy: Solovair boots are built on different "lasts" (molds). The 409 Last (standard Derby) is known to run large. UK and EU customers frequently report needing to size down by 0.5 to 1.0 size compared to standard athletic shoes to achieve a proper fit.
Heat-Sealed Soles: Like their historical partners, Solovair uses a heat-sealing process to melt the PVC sole to the welt. While this is exceptionally waterproof, most local cobblers cannot resole them. Owners in the UK must typically use the official repair partner (The Boot Repair Company) to maintain the original air-cushioned aesthetic.
Manufacturing: All core Goodyear Welted lines are manufactured in the Wollaston factory, Northamptonshire, UK. No overseas contract manufacturing is used for these collections.
